Read
the DLI licensing agreement and submit the registration form to gain
access to the QED Stata archive.
Run the Qregstr command in a QProfile session to get the QED Data password.
Browse the QED data archive and find a data
set that covers something of interests to you. (Warning: you are
responsible for finding in time a data set that proves useable for the assignment.)
The following data sets are not recommended
Find an article or working paper that uses
that data set ora similar data set. See suggested journals.
Check to see that the paper is not already reserved
or excluded by going here.
Reserve that paper for yourself by
e-mailing the data file and a full citation of the paper (including a link to it if
possible) you wish to use to Jason.
The paper is yours only when Jason confirms it by e-mail.
Since many teams will be drawn to similar articles, you should send two or more papers
to Jason in case others have just recently reserved your first choice.
Describe the purpose of the paper you choose,
the variables used in the statistical analysis, and the interpretation
of the results.
Use the Qextract to read the data set. Replicate
the paper's sample selection criteria as much as possible, and attempt
to make a data set similar to the one in the paper. This includes
generated variables, such as indicators, transformations of variables,
etc. Describe
any problems you encounter replicating the statistics.
Follow the principles discussed in class for creating tables, graphs, and
the discussion of the data.
Run a multiple linear regression using the
data. If possible, replicate a model from the paper or at least use
the same variables. Report and interpret your results. Use
your results in at least one way (hypothesis testing, prediction).
Compare your results to the paper.
If the article uses many variables, choose a
subset of those or similar variables to use in your model (e.g. limit the
number of variables to 10 or so).
Write your report using Microsoft Word or
any word processor of your choice. Print the file to PDF or HTML format. Two
machines in Dunning 350 have Acrobat installed, which allows you to print any file to
a PDF file, just as would print to a real printer. Simply select PDFWriter as the printer
to use.
I suggest you follow the report template I
provide. Post the file to your homepage on qlink in the ec452 directory.
I will look for your assignment in either hw1.htm or hw1.pdf. Post your
project to ONE of this files in the corresponding format. I will not go to ec452/index.html
and follow links. Teams should post to only one team member's homepage, but the project must list
the e-mail addresses of all the team members.
Checklist of common posting mistakes
Your course directory MUST be called ec452 not econ452
Your project MUST be in a file called hw1.htm or hw1.pdf, not hw1.html
and not hw1.doc
Your ec452 directory and your project file must be accessible (i.e. published).
Do NOT expect me to follow a link from an index file. Either I find ec452/hw1.htm
or I find ec452/hw1.pdf or you have not completed the assignment properly and you get 0 marks.
Inside filemgr, press "L" and then enter "mkwww".
Or, at the "====> " prompt, enter "mkwww".
Inside filemgr, highlight "www" and press "Enter". You should see
one file there, called "index.html". Highlight "index.html" and enter "V"
to view its contents. Enter "Q" to quit and return to filemgr.
Switch to your WWW browser (Netscape or Explorer). In the address
or location window, enter "http://qlink.queensu.ca/~<your account>"
where <your account> is your
qlink i.d. (like 1cf0). What you should see is the generic homepage
created by the mkwww command and placed in index.html.
.Inside filemgr and viewing the www directory, make a subdirectory called
ec452 (enter "L" and then enter "mkdir www/ec452" or enter the "mkdir www/ec452"
command directly).
Switch your WWW browser and modify the location/address to "http://qlink.queensu.ca/~<your
account>/ec452". You should see "Forbidden You don't have permission
to access /~<your account>/ec452 on this server."
Back in filemgr press "L" and enter "pico www/ec452/index.html".
Enter "This is a first draft of my Econ 452 Homepage." Press "Ctrl
o Enter" and then press "Ctrl x".
Switch back to your browser and re-load the ec452 directory.
Use your browser to "View Information" on the file. Notice
