Canadian Econometric Study Group 1997 Meeting
September 26-28, 1997
How to Get to Kingston
There are three ways to get to Kingston: automobile, train, and plane.
For participants from southern Ontario and eastern Quebec, the easiest way
is probably to drive. This is also the cheapest way if two or more people
share a ride.
Getting to Kingston by Car
Kingston is just south of Highway 401, the main artery between Toronto and
Montreal. Take Highway 401 to the Sydenham Road exit. Go south on Sydenham
Road until it ends at Princess Street. Turn left on Princess and go over
the railway tracks. The Ambassador Hotel (1550 Princess Street) is just
ahead on the right.
Getting to Kingston by Train
Anyone in southern Ontario or eastern Quebec who does not plan to drive
should take the train. Even many of those who are coming from further away
should take it as the last leg of their journey. It is almost as easy, and
a great deal cheaper, to take the train to Kingston from Toronto or
Montreal than to fly from Toronto. There are frequent Pacific Western
buses from the Toronto airport to the Royal York Hotel, which is just
across the street from Union Station; there is a tunnel to the station
from the lower level of the hotel. All trains from Montreal to Kingston
stop at Dorval station, which is only about a mile from Dorval Airport.
Trains between downtown Toronto and Kingston generally take about two
hours, as do trains between Dorval and Kingston. Trains to and from
downtown Montreal take a bit longer. For information and reservations,
contact Via Rail Canada.
Significantly lower prices are available if you reserve at least a week in
advance.
The train station in Kingston is within sight of the Ambassador Hotel, but
the walking distance is about twice the straight line distance. Call the
hotel at 548-3605 when you arrive at the station, and they will send a van
to pick you up. If you wish, you could call them before you get on the
train to have them meet it.
Getting to Kingston by Air
It makes no sense to fly to Kingston unless you are flying to Toronto
first, and even then it is often better to take the train. The only
airline that serves Kingston is Canadian
Airlines International. There are three or four daily flights each
way. Kingston airport is quite some distance from the Ambassador Hotel.
If you call the Ambassador Hotel at 613 548-3605 before you leave, they
can have someone meet your plane.
