Servers maintained by the Queen's Economics Department

The Economics Department operates a number of servers. All faculty members and graduate students automatically get accounts on qed, the main machine, which handles electronic mail and the Department's web server. This machine is a 2.8 GHz. Pentium 4 with 1 GB of memory running Linux. Although qed is quite powerful, other, more specialized machines should be used for extremely CPU-intensive or memory-intensive programs. Many of them are significantly faster than qed.

There are numerous other servers. All of them run TSP, Shazam, Ox, Octave, and R. Many of them run Matlab and Stata, and several run Maple and Gauss. All machines have up-to-date versions of TeX, along with the Fortran compilers g77 and gfortran, the C/C++ compiler gcc, and the Pascal compiler gpc.

If you are doing something that is very CPU intensive, you should experiment to see which architecture (Intel Core 2, AMD 64, or Intel Pentium 4) they are best suited to. In most cases, the Core 2 machines (cox, granger, and sargan) are likely to be the fastest.

All of the machines in Dunning 211 share the same userids and home directories. A file created on one of them is available on all of them.

  • cox: A 2.4 GHz. Core 2 Q6600 (4 cores, 4 GB) located in Dunning 211 and running 64-bit Linux.

  • granger: A 2.66 GHz. Core 2 Duo E6700 (2 cores, 2 GB) located in Dunning 211 and running 64-bit Linux.

  • sargan: A 2.4 GHz. Core 2 Duo E6600 (2 cores, 2 GB) running 64-bit Linux.

  • tobin: A 2.2 GHz. Athon 64x2 (2 cores, 2 GB) running 64-bit Linux. Located in Dunning 211, it is a workstation as well as a server.

  • rust: A 2.8 GHz. Pentium 4 (1 GB) located in Dunning 211 running 32-bit Linux.

  • lovell: A 2.0 GHz. dual processor Opteron running 32-bit Linux.

  • waugh: A 2.0 GHz. Athon 64x2 (2 cores, 2 GB) running 32-bit Linux.

  • durbin: A 2.5 GHz. Pentium 4 (1 GB) running 32-bit Linux.

  • frisch: A 1.66 MHz. Athlon (1 GB) running 32-bit Linux.

  • malinvaud: A 3.2 GHz. Pentium 4 (1 GB) running Linux. It is not part of the Dunning 211 cluster.

  • edith: A 3.2 GHz. Pentium 4 (1 GB) running Linux. It holds the old version of the CRSP data base and some other data sets. It also has Matlab and Gauss, including several optional modules for nonlinear optimization and specialized applications. It is not part of the Dunning 211 cluster.

  • alumni: A 667 MHz. Pentium III 667 (512 MB). It is used to provide e-mail services to QED alumni.
Accounts on servers other than qed can be obtained from Mark Babcock.
